“Tree With Deep Roots,” the Winner of the Grand Prize at the 48th Baeksang Arts Awards, is a historical drama series that takes place during the reign of King Sejong, the Fourth King of Joseon Dynasty. King Sejong is one of the most respected monarchs in Korean history, as he made huge strides in the country’s advancement in science, literature, and policy. He’s most remembered for spreading literacy among regular citizens through the creation of Hangul, or Korean alphabet.
This SBS drama series is based on the novel by Lee Jeong Myung, where a series of mysterious crimes are discovered prior to the revelation of Hangul. Han Suk Kyu plays the lead role of King Sejong, which earned him the Grand Prize at the SBS Drama Awards. He is also joined by a star-studded cast that includes Jang Hyuk, Shin Se Kyung, Super Junior’s Kibum, Hyun Woo, Jo Jin Woong, Yoon Je Moon, Shin So Yool, and Yoo Hyun Soo. Song Joong Ki makes a special appearance as the young Sejong, while Baek Yoon Shik plays the role of King Tejong.
